LIFE’s partnership with American Humane Association

AHAThanks to Lois Pope and the American Humane Association, dogs, cats and other animals in need of emergency rescue, medical treatment and shelter services in times of disaster and abuse now have hope.  The 50-foot-long Lois Pope Red Star Rescue Vehicles are manned by specially trained responders and carry supplies and equipment to shelter up to 100 animals.  The vehicles are also used as mobile sites for humane education programs and animal cruelty interventions.

Through the support of Mrs. Pope and LIFE for AHA’s initiative to Help Bring All Heroes Home, dogs who served alongside military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan are being reunited with their brave human handlers back in the U.S.

Mrs. Pope sponsors the Annual Hero Dog Awards.  This Oscars-like program under the aegis of the American Humane Association salutes canines from across the country who are doing extraordinary work in eight categories: Military, Service, Therapy, Arson, Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement, Guide & Hearing, and Emerging Hero.

American Humane Association’s Lois Pope LIFE Center for Military Affairs comprises of a number of programs and initiatives reflecting both the organization’s and Mrs. Pope’s long-time shared commitment to the well-being of America’s veterans, including military service canines.  These programs include: K-9 Battle Buddies™; Wags4Patriots™; Operation Purple; and Red Star® for Warriors.
