All over the world millions of hearts beat stronger thanks to the research, guidance and care of Dr. Mehmet Oz. On March 18, 2008 this world renowned Professor and Vice Chairman of Surgery at Columbia University, New York City and Director of the Cardiovascular Institute, was honored for his groundbreaking work with the 10th Annual Lois Pope LIFE International Research Award. Mrs. Lois Pope, founder & president of the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation, presented Dr. Oz with a check for $100,000 at a cocktail reception and awards dinner held at the Lois Pope LIFE Center at the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine.
Dr. Oz joins an illustrious group of past recipients of the Lois Pope International Research Award. Dr. Oz has long been considered one of the most accomplished cardiothoracic surgeons in the United States. His research includes heart replacement surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and healthcare policy. He is the Irving Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Columbia University and directs the Heart Assist Device Program and is a founder of the Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Medical Center.
"The idea of treating a person, not just a disease, is important," he explained. One facet of his multidisciplinary approach encourages patients to truly look at their lives and ask "why am I here?" This encourages patients to think about motivations and objectives in life.
The author of more than 350 publications, Dr. Oz has written the award-winning book Healing from the Heart. His latest four books, all co-written with Dr. Michael Roizen are: You: Staying Young: The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty; You: The Owner's Manual, You: The Smart Patient and You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management. All have all been listed on the "New York Times Bestseller List.
Dr. Oz has been a leading force in helping in the battle against childhood obesity. He is the founder of HealthCorps a program that educates American youth about the workings and wonders of their bodies through in school seminars on diet, nutrition, and exercise. HealthCorps empowers children to become educated consumers and to make shifts in behavior that can be measured by changes in rates of obesity and physical fitness as well as mental resillence and self esteem. The program is now schools in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida. Dr. Oz will use the Lois Pope LIFE International Research Award to further his work with childhood obesity and HealthCorps.

Established in 1999, the Lois Pope LIFE International Research Award honors outstanding scientists who have made significant medical breakthroughs. Mrs. Pope serves as a trustee of the University of Miami and is a member of the Board of the University's Miller School of Medicine, Dean's Leadership Cabinet. In 1996, Mrs. Pope donated $10 million - the largest single contribution given for neurological research to the University. These funds were provided to establish the Lois Pope LIFE Center which is today one of the top neurological research and treatment centers in the world and home to the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
