Lois Pope, one of America's leading philanthropists, is the founder of the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation and Leaders in Furthering Education (LIFE). These two charitable organizations are devoted to saving lives, helping people help themselves, improving the quality of life for families in need and encouraging young Americans to become leaders by helping others.
Mrs. Pope is also Chairman and co-founder of the Disabled Veterans' LIFE Memorial Foundation, which is leading a successful drive to erect the first memorial in Washington, D.C. honoring America's more than 3 million living disabled American veterans, as well as all disabled veterans throughout American history.
Following is a sampling of Mrs. Pope's numerous good works that benefit the less fortunate and awaken Americans to the understanding that making a difference in the world is the right and responsibility of everyone.
The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial
Throughout history, Americans have erected monuments to their heroes. Thus far, however, we have failed to honor the extraordinary sacrifices made by one group of unsung heroes - those who bear the scars of war on their bodies, minds and spirits. In partnership with the Disabled American Veterans, Mrs. Pope has formed the Disabled Veterans' LIFE Memorial Foundation to honor the more than 3 million living disabled American veterans, and those who came before them, who were disabled while defending our American freedom.
In August of 2002, Mrs. Pope made a landmark $2 million gift to serve as the springboard for the campaign to fund construction of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C. Further, upon the death of her close personal friend and colleague, former Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jesse Brown, Mrs. Pope established a million-dollar challenge grant. Every contribution to this special fund will be matched dollar for dollar by the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation, up to one million dollars.
In 2006, Mrs. Pope established a second challenge grant matching all gifts through the year up to $5 million.
The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial will command an impressive two-acre site within full view of the U.S. Capitol. The Memorial will be located adjacent to the National Mall and across Independence Avenue from the U.S. Botanic Garden at Washington Avenue and Second Street.
A site dedication ceremony is scheduled for the Memorial on Veteran's Day of 2007. Ground-breaking will occur in 2008 and the Memorial is scheduled to be dedicated in 2010.
Disabled Veterans' LIFE Awards Gala
The Lois Pope LIFE Foundation recognizes the achievements of a disabled veteran annually with LIFE's Presidential Unsung Hero Award. The award, a $50,000 grant, will be presented to Deputy Secretary of Veteran's Affairs, Gordon Mansfield.
LIFE's Annual "Lady In Red" Gala
Each year, Leaders in Furthering Education - LIFE hosts a black-tie benefit where attendees participate in live and silent auctions for graciously donated items such as cars, fine jewelry, artwork and luxury travel.
The 2007 "Lady In Red" Gala will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2007 at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. Lois Pope, Mary Montgomery and Elizabeth Bowden serve as Chairwomen for this glamorous, yet fun filled evening. Melania and Donald Trump are Honorary Chairmen for the Gala. Mr. Leo Albert is the Grand Honoree of the evening.
Proceeds from the 2007 "Lady in Red" Gala will benefit the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial.
LIFE's Annual International Wine Auction and Dinner
This annual evening for wine connoisseurs, collectors and those who enjoy an intimate evening with great wines, dining and entertainment will want to mark their calendars for March 5, 2008. This "by invitation only evening" features a cocktail reception and silent auction of wines, spirits and champagnes, followed by a gourmet dinner and live auction of fine wines from around the world. The "nightcap" of the evening is a live performance by a top name entertainer.

LIFE's Annual Lois Pope Golf Tournament
Golfers from Palm Beach County and beyond gather each year to enjoy a day of golfing and support LIFE's Summer Camp Program for underprivileged and special needs kids who live in households with incomes that fall below the federal poverty level.
The 14th Annual Lois Pope Golf Tournament will be held on January 26, 2008, at the beautiful Sherbrooke Golf & Country Club in Lake Worth, Florida. Over the past 13 years the Tournament, in combination with other LIFE fundraising events, has raised the necessary funds to send more than 13,500 underprivileged and special needs children to summer camps in Florida and New York.
The Lois Pope Annual LIFE Unsung Hero Scholarship
The Lois Pope Annual LIFE Unsung Hero Scholarship awards $25,000 medical scholarships to four academically deserving, community service oriented and financially needy inner city students who are attending medical school at the City College of New York (CCNY). The scholarships are an extension of Mrs. Pope's vision for rewarding and encouraging young people who put forth extraordinary effort into helping others. The Annual LIFE Unsung Hero Scholarships will be awarded at CCNY in September 2007.
Lois Pope's Annual LIFE International Research Award
Each year, Lois Pope presents a $100,000 grant to an internationally renowned scientist whose medical breakthroughs have led to patient applications. This grant rewards researchers who have the courage to look at things in a new way and find answers where there were once only questions. | The Lois Pope LIFE Center at the University of Miami School of Medicine |
In 1996, Mrs. Pope announced a $10 million gift to the University of Miami to establish the LIFE Center and fund 20 LIFE Fellows for neurological research. This generous commitment became the largest private gift of its kind to support spinal cord research.
On October 26, 2000, the Lois Pope LIFE Center opened its doors, ushering in a new age in neurological research. Ten thousand spinal cord injuries occur in the United States each year, and each year millions of people are diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases and disorders. With the opening of the Lois Pope LIFE Center, finding a way to end paralysis and cure these debilitating diseases is close to becoming a reality.
In 1998, Hurricane Mitch tore through Guatemala, leveling villages and destroying lives. Thousands were left in ramshackle settlements. Disease became rampant. Only three in ten children lived to see their first birthday. Recognizing that people would not be able to rebuild their lives without access to clean water, the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation, working with the Center for Environmental Studies at Florida Atlantic University, donated $100,000 to create a new clean-water system for the entire hard-hit village of El Triunfo.
This initial donation sparked a cooperative spirit that soon led other charitable organizations to step in and contribute. A new school system and sanitation system were built and materials were donated for better, stronger homes.
Sudan Genocide Response Team
Mrs. Pope and the LIFE Foundation provide an annual grant to the Congregation HarHa Shem which organized the Sudan Genocide Response Team. The Team was formed to help young refugee women in the Sudan, who have been displaced due to war and are most at risk in this region. The grant today is helping these young women migrate to America and find new lives in a free society.
Mrs. Pope and LIFE have for many years supported the work of Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel's Red Cross. With friend and colleague Mac Schwebel, Mrs. Pope donated the first LIFE ambulance to MDA. Mrs. Pope joined with friends Robert and Mary Montgomery in donating a third LIFE ambulance stationed at Mizpe Ramon. A fourth LIFE ambulance was donated and was presented to MDA by Mrs. Pope and LIFE in honor of the Ritter Family. This unit is stationed in Nazareth. A fifth LIFE ambulance was donated by Mrs. Pope and Jacqueline Goldman and is stationed at Rishon le Zion, located on the border of Tel Aviv.
PETMOBILE CELEBRATES SECOND ANNIVERSARY - In 2006, Lois Pope donated $250,000 to the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League for the purchase of a new mobile pet adoption unit. In just two short years of operation the Lois Pope PetMobile has adopted nearly 2,000 cats and dogs to loving homes. All animals adopted from aboard the Lois Pope PetMobile are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, have a Palm Beach County license and identification microchip.
The Lois Pope PetMobile visits various locations throughout Palm Beach County, Wednesday through Sunday, 52 weeks a year. Adoption fees range from $55 - $105. Those individuals and families wishing to adopt pets complete an application, are interviewed and if cleared for adopting a cat or dog are sent home with their new family pet and a care package. New pet owners have access to training classes at the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and a number of other services offered by the organization.
